Meta + ΑΙ = L.F.E

We think the title of the section says it all. Meta and AI are in love forever, so let’s see what Mark announced to us last week.

  • Meta AI Assistant: We’re moving from the AI race to the AI Chatbot race, because one is none, dear friends. Meta AI is a general-purpose AI chatbot. It will help you plan a trip and even answer questions you would typically ask Google. The chatbot can also generate images with the command /imagine and has access to Bing and therefore real-time information. For now (since we haven’t tried it yet), the only difference with ChatGPT Plus is that Meta AI is free. Meta AI will be available on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, and will be added to Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses (we’ll talk about those in a bit, and by a bit we mean the very next highlight) and to Quest 3.

  • AI Studio: Simply, concisely, in a Doric style; it’s a platform where you can create AI chatbots for the company’s various messaging services, including Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger. It will mainly concern e-commerce and customer support chatbots.

  • AI Characters: Along with the Meta AI chatbot, Meta also announced 28 (!!!) new AI characters that you can talk to on its messaging apps. Most of them are celebrities and influencers like Charli D’Amelio, Kendall Jenner, MrBeast, Snoop Dogg, and Paris Hilton, while others have specific uses like a travel agent. The interesting thing about these chatbots is that as you talk to them, their profile picture animates slightly based on the conversation. They also have their own profile on Instagram and Facebook.

We’ve said it before, but Meta did something brilliant by making its AI models open access. It was able to fully benefit from the community, as Ahmad Al-Dahle (VP of generative AI at Meta) himself stated:

“We just saw huge demand for the models, and then we saw an incredible amount of innovation happening on the models that really helped us understand their performance, understand their weaknesses, and help us iterate and leverage some of those components directly into product.”

Now we can even wear AI! The Humane AI Pin made its appearance at Paris Fashion Week. We saw it on Naomi Campbell’s lapel during the Coperni Spring-Summer 2024 collection show. This is the first time the device has been seen on someone who does not work at Humane.

The AI pin is an “intelligent clothing-based wearable device that uses a range of sensors that enable contextual and ambient compute interactions”. However, it’s not the only AI wearable out there. Meta, in collaboration with Ray-Ban, will release the Meta Smart Glasses Collection. This is a collection of sunglasses that will allow you to stay connected and capture the moment without having to take out your phone. You can see the entire collection here.

Finally, we have the Rewind Pendant, a necklace that listens to everything you do in the real world, transcribes it, encrypts it, and stores it on your phone. The widespread use of all of these seems quite futuristic and distant, but it’s probably just the beginning, as more and more companies will be involved in blending the physical and digital worlds in the most literal sense, and not in the metaverse sense.

  1. EY announced its new EY.ai platform. According to them, it is a “unified platform that combines human capabilities with the power of artificial intelligence to help businesses transform by adopting it responsibly and with greater confidence in their operations.”
  2. Spotify does not intend to completely ban AI-generated content, but rather content that is the product of direct imitation. It also appears to be working on a new text-to-playlist feature.
  3. Coca-Cola created a new flavor of soft drink with AI. Are we impressed? Not particularly. It’s a marketing trend that will continue to exist as long as AI is at its peak.
  4. Visa  intends to invest about $100 million in generative AI companies related to commerce and payments.
  5. Microsoft has already integrated Dall-E 3 into its online AI suite.

Learning Bytes 🧐

  1. The Advertising Association will form an AI taskforce to determine a coordinated approach to AI in terms of policy, ethics, and legality.

  2. Google, n light of its 25th anniversary, will provide $10 million in grants to the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) organization and the REC Foundation (RECF) to help 300,000 middle school students in the US participate in robotics programs.

  3. Renate Nyborg (former CEO of Tinder) founded  Meeno, μa start-up that aims to combat loneliness through its AI-powered chatbot, which she calls a “personal mentor.” Indeed. We remain skeptical about how this will evolve, especially since it targets young people aged 18-25.
  4. The WGA reached an agreement with Hollywood, which will prohibit the use of AI in writing and editing scripts – at an individual level it can be used.

The Gothenburg Film Festival is replacing Liv Ullmann with artificial intelligence in Bergman’s “Persona.”
